Homemade Valentine's Day Pop Tarts

kimberlypettitt2

There's something you should know - I overate Pop Tarts as a kid and can't stomach them now. But THESE - they're almost like a croissant - flaky, not overly sweet, and incredibly delicious. I love all the possibilities that puff pastry brings. I've included step by step picture instructions as well as other delicious options for fillings and toppings below - all of which my family has tried and loved.

What you'll need:

2 sheets Puff Pastry

4-5 TBL favorite jam (I used seedless raspberry)

1/4 cup 2hite chocolate chips, melted with 1-2 TBL heavy cream (once melted add food coloring if desired)

STEP ONE

Thaw puff pastry as directed and cut on parchment paper into hearts - you'll need two hearts per pastry.

STEP 2

Dollop jam into center of puff pastry and spread, leaving space on the edges to press. I went light with my jam - you can use more as the pastry puffs and creates more layers - it just depends on how "goopy" you like it. Top with second puff pastry sheet.

STEP 3

With a fork, press firmly down around the edges to seal and prevent any jam from leaking out.

STEP 4

Bake at 400° for about 15 minutes. Pull from the oven and drizzle with melted white chocolate and sprinkles. Enjoy warm!

OTHER OPTIONS:

  • Fill with Nutella and drizzle with fruit compote or powdered sugar

  • Spread puff pastry liberally with butter, brown sugar and cinnamon and once baked top with ice cream and caramel sauce

  • Fill with chopped apples, a few pieces of frozen butter and cinnamon sugar, top with caramel sauce
