Holiday Traditions: Cookie Taste Off

It's Christmas time, which at our house means baking. Cookies, cakes, pies - you know, only delicious things - hardly ever dinner - because who wants to eat dinner when cookies abound.

Our family has done a cookie taste off before and loved it. The idea was to get our kids excited to spend the day baking with mom (or dad) and then the evening as a family eating cookies and watching The First Presidency Christmas Devotional. The cookie baking and tasting went great, the watching - not so great. Perhaps they'll do better next year. My family loved it so much that they insisted we make this a new tradition and have a holiday treat taste off every year.

Each of my boys perused Pinterest and found a Christmas themed cookie they wanted to bake. With 4 boys I thought it best to start a day early and get the dough made so we weren't spending the whole day in the kitchen (which we did anyway). We ended up baking 6 different cookies but I definitely don't recommend doing more than 4. I've included links to each cookie we made below, including a favorite recipe of my own - peanut butter (which we turned into reindeer).

I also created a FREE printable for rating each cookie that you can access at the bottom of this post. When the time came we sat at the table with our cookies and rating sheet and went through each one together. Once we had tasted all of them we wrote down awards we would give to each of the cookies - the most festive, the most creative, etc. My boys ate it up - literally and figuratively - and we even found some new favorites that will be making a reappearance throughout the season.

Because we had cookies coming out of our ears, we boxed them up afterward and delivered them to family and friends.

COOKIE #1

This cookie was the most time consuming and intricate. It won the award for "THE Coolest." We made this cookie the day before which I do NOT recommend because once the pudding is in the cookie and it sits overnight, it becomes a soggy mess. You can certainly make the sugar cookie mug and candy cane handle - but wait until just before serving to add the pudding and remaining ingredients.

COOKIE #2

Voted the "Most Christmasy," this classic Candy Cane cookie was a hit with a hint of mint. This cookie was perfect for my youngest because it was basically like play-dough. He said "I'm rolling out worms".

COOKIE #3

The Grinch! Most of the family was hesitant to eat a GREEN cookie but found that for 4/6 of us - it was a new favorite! I used a recipe from a friend and colored the batter green. Once the cookies came out of the oven I used heart sprinkles I found at a local craft store but I've linked some on Amazon HERE.

COOKIE #4

Oddly, No picture for this one - but another Christmas classic! Good old Gingerbread Cookies!

COOKIE #5

Dad requested this cookie - it's long been his favorite. Not a Christmas cookie - but it has that sort of flare with Craisins and white chocolate chips.

COOKIE #6

Is this the cookie you've been waiting for?? Voted the most "Merry and Bright" because of Rudolphs nose. This is THE recipe that will make me famous - I just know it - and then I'll have to send my sister royalties because I got it from her. Can you handle the cuteness of these little reindeer??!

With large age gaps in my kids I love finding activities that everyone can get involved in. This tradition is sure to please the old and young. We loved it and hope you will too!!
