Easy Decorations for Cinco De Mayo

Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holiday that commemorates the Battle of Puebla, has become a popular celebration even in the United States. At my house we celebrate it all! Of course I love adding in festive decorations for a party and it makes me happy when some of the decorations can be enjoyed throughout the summer - hello bright colors and succulents - doubling their value!

Here are a few simple ways you can add a festive touch to your Cinco De Mayo celebrations:

  1. Bright and Vibrant Colors: Cinco de Mayo is all about the celebration of Mexican culture, which is known for its bright and vibrant colors. Incorporate everyday decorations such as tablecloths and flower pots in traditional bright Mexican colors like red, green, yellow, orange, and blue. These colors will instantly add a festive vibe to your party space and create a visually appealing setting.

  2. CANDY! I love having snacks, treats, or candy on my counter themed for a holiday or party. Of course you can peruse the candy isle at your local grocery store and find any brightly colored candy - but we chose Hi-Chews because they are similar in look and color to PuChao - a traditional Mexican candy.

  3. Cactus and Succulents: Cacti and succulents are iconic plants of the Mexican desert landscape and can be used as decor elements for your Cinco de Mayo celebration. Place small potted cacti and succulents on tables or around your party space to create a desert-inspired ambiance. You can also use them as centerpieces or incorporate them into your table arrangements for a unique and natural decoration idea. I do not have a green thumb - so incorporating artificial succulents is a must! The picture below is my 3rd attempt at keeping fresh ones alive - prayers are appreciated.

4. Sombreros and Maracas: Incorporate fun and traditional Mexican props like sombreros and maracas into your decor. Hang sombreros on walls or use them as centerpieces and chip holders or just a good old hat! Place maracas on tables, or use as photo props, or an impromptu song and dance show. These props not only add a festive touch to your decorations but also provide interactive elements for the family to enjoy.

5. Fiesta-themed Tableware: Most party stores carry brightly colored plates and Cinco De Mayo themed party decor. My favorite place for themed plates, napkins, and the works is My Minds Eye. They have captured every part of my party brain and put it into fun party supplies. I love them.

6. Piñatas: Piñatas are a staple at Mexican celebrations and can be a fun and interactive decoration idea for your Cinco de Mayo party. I've seen large piñatas made into salsa bars, and mini piñatas for table decor and of course the traditional candy filled piñatas for good old fashioned family fun!

7. Mexican flags: Of course I love everything in mini sized - we like to call it FUN sized. Try incorporating bright Mexican flags, banners as party picks for a charcuterie, or bite sized treats.

Cinco de Mayo is an exciting holiday that celebrates the rich culture and heritage of Mexico. Whether you're hosting a large party or having a small family gathering like me, adding festive decorations can take your celebration to the next level. Incorporating traditional Mexican elements like piñatas, cactus decor, and using vibrant colors and patterns to create an authentic and lively atmosphere. With these creative ideas, your Cinco de Mayo celebration is sure to be a hit for all. So, let's raise a glass (of freshly made limeade!) to the spirit of Cinco de Mayo and say "Salud!" to a night filled with fun, food, and fiesta!
