DIY Football Vase

Gritty with grace. The perfect combo for your Super Bowl party.

When I saw a picture of this vase online I knew I had to recreate it and make a tutorial for you. Many things were learned during the process, for example - trace where to cut BEFORE you cut - you know, things that seem common sense to others - I'm just here make mistakes to help YOU in the long run with the process (wink, wink).

The process is really quite easy if you have sharp scissors and take the time to trace your lines.

You'll want to start with a full size leather football. If you have an old one lying around that kids don't use - put it to use. I purchased mine new because heaven forbid I take an old one to use for flowers - it must be a boy thing (#momofboys). I also grabbed a cylinder vase from the dollar store.

Using a sharpie or other writing object that you can easily see on the leather, trace a circle around each end of the football - gaging about the same height as the vase. No need to make it exactly centered - I think it looks better if there is more space between one end and the laces. Using a utility knife, cut along the traced lines. Once you puncture through all the layers, the football will deflate and it may be easier to use scissors.

Keep all the layers in tact with the football as they help give it shape.

Slide your vase filled with water inside the football and fill with flowers. As you can see, my lines are crooked, which is where tracing your circle before cutting comes in handy but we will just hide that with the flowers - so if your lines are crooked - no need to panic purchase another football.

I like to supplement most of my fresh flower arrangements with fake stems as well. In this arrangement I added fake eucalyptus stems and red florals. This is especially helpful with this particular vase because if there is any space between the top edge of the football and the vase (or if you happened to cut it a little crooked), you can place your fake stems that don't need water in the space to hide the edge and tie in the rest of the fake stems throughout the remainder of the arrangement.

Did you make this?? How did it go? Any tips you would add?? Be sure to leave a comment and follow along for more football and holiday fun.
