Candy Skewers

Your little leprechauns will want to do an Irish Jig when you hand them these fun St. Patrick's Day candy skewers. Of course, these can be made for ANY holiday but I love a rainbow and green theme.

These are incredibly simple to make but take a little time. I've got some tips and tricks of course to help simplify the process. A full list of what I used is at the end of the post.

First you'll want skewer sticks. I do not recommend dowels, treat or sucker sticks - they are too thick to easily slide candy. You can typically find these in the kitchen isle at your local grocery store.

Choose your theme. Whether it's St. Patricks Day or 4th of July, you'll want a color scheme before you choose your array of treats. I chose items about small to medium in size so they would slide into a long, skinny pretzel cellophane bag. You can certainly slide the items all the way to the end - but I like having a little trinket at the top. A star, clover, heart, or paper Santa head can easily be hot glued to the top.

Using the sharp end of the skewer stick, slide your candy up to the top. I quickly found that some of the candy would leave sticky residue all along the stick so I would recommend avoiding really gummy items like taffy. The frogs and Rolos worked great.

Once your desired amount of candy is on the stick, slide a pretzel rod bag over the top to keep it fresh and tie it neatly with a bow.

Of course you will want to clip the sharp end off with scissors. You can even rinse the very end of the stick if it still has candy residue, being careful not to get the candy wet.

Cue the happy dance - you're done!! And your little shamrock shakers will thank you!
