2 DIY Easter and Spring Time Floral Arrangements

Springtime! The most wonderful time of year for floral arrangements. With flowers popping up from the ground and the idea of new beginnings, I love bringing that beauty inside - especially when it snows like it has this year in Utah - I need that fresh, sunshine feel, even though outside it is blustery.

Are tulips an Easter flower?

YES! In the spring there are so many beautiful flowers to choose from, however, tulips are one of the most popular flowers for Easter arrangements because they come in a wide variety of colors and can be arranged in a variety of ways to create stunning displays. They are often the first flowers to pop up from the ground after a long winter and mine have been known to be very hearty through some early spring storms.

Are tulips good for floral arrangements?

Because tulips are available in many colors, including pink, purple, yellow, red, and white, it makes them a versatile choice for any spring arrangement. They can also be mixed with other flowers like daffodils, hyacinths, and ranunculus to create a colorful and dynamic display.

Today I'm sharing two arrangements for your Easter or springtime table-scape. In one I've used only tulips and the other a mix of flowers. Together they create a beautiful compliment to each other.

How long do tulips last in an arrangement?

When selecting tulips for your arrangement, it is important to choose flowers that are still in bud form, rather than fully open. This will ensure that they last longer and continue to open up over time, creating a beautiful display that lasts for several days and up to a week or two. I love purchasing my flowers from Costco because they are affordable and beautiful and always seem to last the longest.

When arranging tulips, it's best to start with a few stems and gradually add more as you go. You can create a simple, minimalist arrangement by placing a few tulips in a vase or create a more elaborate display by incorporating other flowers and greenery. In this display I've added carrots with their green stems to add more dynamic and greenery.

What flowers to mix with tulips in a bouquet?

In addition to using beautiful spring flowers like tulips, there are other creative ways to add a seasonal touch to your floral arrangement. One popular trend is incorporating springtime vegetables into the display.

Carrots, for example, can be a playful addition to a spring floral arrangement. They can be left whole or cut into thin slices and arranged amongst the flowers. The bright orange color of the carrots adds a pop of color that complements the flowers.

Another vegetable that can be used in a springtime arrangement is cabbage. The round shape and frilly leaves of the cabbage can add texture and visual interest to the display. I love this arrangement for Easter because it reminds me of Peter Rabbit - the quintessential Easter and springtime story.

Other smaller vegetables like radishes, beets, brussel sprouts, and artichokes can also be used in a springtime floral arrangement or bouquet. They add a unique and dynamic touch. To add these vegetables to an arrangement you can use a wooden skewer in one end of the veggie and the other end into the vase, trimming the skewer as needed.

When incorporating vegetables into your floral arrangement, it's important to consider their size and color. You want to choose vegetables that complement the flowers and do not overpower them. It's also important to choose vegetables that are fresh and in good condition.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

Carrot arrangement:

  • Carrots with stems and greenery

  • 2 glass vases - one will need to fit inside the other with enough room to arrange carrots between the vases

  • Tulips

Cabbage arrangement:

  • Large cabbage head

  • small glass cup

  • knife

  • floral stems (I purchased mine from Costco)

HOW TO

For the carrot arrangement place the smaller vase inside the larger vase and arrange carrots around the edges. Inside the smaller vase, place your tulips. Add water to both vases. You can use green twist ties or floral wire to keep the carrot tops from flopping over but I like the messy look.

You can watch a quick YouTube short with the process HERE.

For the cabbage arrangement, hollow out the center of your cabbage wide enough to fit your glass cup. Press the cup into the center, fill with water and arrange your flowers, cutting their length as needed. YouTube link HERE for this arrangement.

I hope you enjoy your Easter celebrations and that this floral arrangement tutorial brings you joy!

XOXO,

Kimberly Marie
